About The Tool

What Is A Pass Completion Percentage Calculator?

A pass completion percentage calculator measures how accurate a player’s passing is. Pass completion percentage, also called pass accuracy, is the share of attempted passes that reach a teammate. It’s one of the most common football stats on TV graphics, in match reports and in player scouting.

This pass completion percentage calculator goes further than the basic sum. It compares your figure with a typical range for your position, so a striker isn’t judged against a centre-back. It can split passes by length, combine up to 15 matches the right way, and tell you how many completed passes in a row you’d need to reach a target.

Season stats tip: never average match percentages. Add up all completed and all attempted passes first. Several Matches mode in the pass completion percentage calculator does this for you.

What Is A Good Pass Completion Percentage By Position?

Typical ranges for players in top professional leagues.

PositionTypical %Why
Goalkeeper62–76%Many long goal kicks and clearances
Centre-Back85–92%Lots of short, safe passes
Full-Back76–84%Crosses and passes in tight wide areas
Defensive Midfielder85–91%Keeps the ball moving
Central Midfielder82–89%Mix of safe and forward passes
Attacking Midfielder75–84%Risky, creative passes
Winger72–80%Crosses and passes in the final third
Striker65–76%Passing under pressure, back to goal

These ranges are a rough guide and change with team style: possession teams have higher figures than direct, long-ball teams. The goalkeeper range is in line with Opta data showing Premier League keepers averaged around 69% in recent seasons. Amateur and youth players are usually lower.

Pass Length

Short, Medium And Long Pass Accuracy

The pass completion percentage calculator can split your passes by length.

🟢

Short Passes

5–15 yards

The safest passes on the pitch. Top players often complete around 88–94% of them.

  • Tip: use the inside of the foot and pass across the body
🟡

Medium Passes

15–30 yards

Switches and passes into midfield. A typical top-level range is about 82–90%.

  • Tip: lock the ankle and follow through towards the target
🔴

Long Passes

30+ yards

Long balls and diagonals are much harder. Even good passers often complete only 45–65%.

  • Tip: strike through the middle of the ball for a flatter pass
⚖️

Safe vs Risky

Context matters

A very high percentage can mean a player only plays safe sideways passes. Creative passes fail more often.

  • Tip: look at forward passes and chances created too
Tips

How To Improve Your Pass Completion

  • Scan over your shoulder before the ball arrives so you know your options.
  • Open your body so you can pass forwards and sideways.
  • Play the simple pass when you’re under pressure.
  • Pass to a teammate’s stronger foot and in front of them when they’re running.
  • Practise one- and two-touch passing in small-sided games.
  • Work on your weaker foot so defenders can’t force you into bad passes.
  • Weight long passes carefully: hard enough to arrive, soft enough to control.
  • Track your passing over several matches with the pass completion percentage calculator.
FAQ

Pass Completion Percentage Calculator FAQ

What Is A Pass Completion Percentage Calculator?

A pass completion percentage calculator works out how many of a player’s passes reached a teammate. Enter completed and attempted passes and it gives the percentage, compares it with typical figures for the position and shows what’s needed to hit a target.

Is The Pass Completion Percentage Calculator Free?

Yes. The pass completion percentage calculator is completely free, needs no sign-up and works on phones, tablets and computers.

How Do You Calculate Pass Completion Percentage?

Divide completed passes by attempted passes and multiply by 100. For example, 42 completed out of 50 attempted is 42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%.

What Is A Good Pass Completion Percentage?

It depends on the position. In top leagues, centre-backs and defensive midfielders often complete 85–92% of their passes, while wingers and strikers are usually lower, around 65–80%.

Why Is A Goalkeeper’s Pass Completion Lower?

Goalkeepers play many long goal kicks and clearances, which are hard to complete. Opta data shows Premier League keepers averaged around 69% in recent seasons.

How Do I Combine Several Matches?

Add up all completed passes and all attempted passes, then divide. Don’t average the match percentages, because matches with more passes should count for more. Several Matches mode does this for you.

Is A Higher Pass Completion Always Better?

Not always. A player who only passes sideways can have a very high percentage. Forward passes that create chances are riskier, so creative players often have lower figures.

What Counts As A Short, Medium Or Long Pass?

A common definition is short passes of 5 to 15 yards, medium passes of 15 to 30 yards and long passes of more than 30 yards.

How Many Passes Do I Need To Reach My Target?

Enter a target percentage and the pass completion percentage calculator shows how many completed passes in a row you’d need to reach it.
