An Interview In English Tips: Questions & Answers

An interview in English Tips: An interview is essentially a structured conversation where one participant asks questions, and the other provides answers.

1. Bullet Proof Preparation For an Interview in English

Research the Company

This of course includes the company website, social media profiles and the latest news about the company. Read the company website and the Wikipedia entry (if there is one) carefully and write a brief description of the company. You can also search for the company on Google News and read the latest news and articles.

Many applicants take this point lightly and are flabbergasted when the interviewee asks: “Please tell us what you know about our company.” You can score points especially in the interview if you can include a positive news story about the company. Tell the HR manager that you are impressed by the newly planned building, the new advertising campaign or the newly defined mission statement.

Find out the Interview History

Anyone who has an interview with a large company has a good chance of finding a lot of information about the course of the interview on the Internet. To do this, simply search for the company name and “Job Interview”. Portals such as glassdoor.com are there for applicants to share their experience with job interviews or to evaluate the actual job. If you are lucky, you will also find possible interview questions for which you can then prepare well.

Prepare English Questions for the Interview

Only very small companies still ask the worn-out question: “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” – Why? Because the larger companies know very well that every applicant prepares himself for this question and you don’t get a real answer from the applicant.

Nevertheless, you should also prepare yourself for this question, even if it is now referred to as unprofessional in human resources. It is best to first make a long list of possible questions and answer them in writing. This is by no means about learning the answers by heart, but rather only preparing to avoid a possible blackout.

Body Language and Dress Rehearsal

If you have all the information ready, then you should rehearse the English interview. The main purpose of this is to help you know how your voice and body language work. Record yourself using a camera or smartphone. Practice walking into the room, shaking hands with someone, sitting down, and gradually answering the questions.

After you have recorded yourself, you should take a critical look at the footage. Ask yourself: How do I get across? Does this seem natural? At what point does it usually fail and how do I gesticulate in a conversation? Have a friend or relative mimic the other person at the interview and ask them how you looked.

Dress Smartly

Whether you feel like it or not: During an interview you will of course also be judged on your appearance. It’s not about whether your conversation partner finds you attractive, but about how you present yourself to a potential customer.

If you have the time, you can drive to the company headquarters and watch the people who are already working there. How do they attract? Please note: In a company that accepts “casual attire”, you should still dress conservatively and professionally for an interview as this shows that you are taking the interview seriously.

2. Standard Questions

What is your first impression?

  • Tell me about yourself
  • What did you like / hate about your current / previous job?
  • What do you know about our company?
  • Why do you want to work for us?

Do you offer added value for the company?

  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • What have you learned from your mistakes?
  • Where do you see yourself in five years?

3. Behavioral Interview Questions

The concept of “Behavioral Interview Questions” is based on the aim of finding out how the applicant has reacted to certain situations or events in the past. It should be noted here that different properties are desired for each occupational group.

It is hoped that the answers will reveal how one would get along with this person in daily working life. Often these questions are not asked by the HR manager, but are asked directly by a future employee who may not have gotten to grips with a certain behavior of the previous employee and wants to prevent them from hiring someone with a similar character again.

  • Troubleshooting
  • Interpersonal contacts
  • Creativity
  • Critical ability
  • Communication
  • Customer focus

4. How to be Positively Remembered

Interviews are nerve-wracking and if an applicant is actually so nervous that it becomes uncomfortable even for the recruiter, then of course the whole thing is not fun. Nobody wants to stand out negatively and most applicants try to remember perfect answers to popular application questions in advance.

HR professionals take notes about the applicants they interview for good reason, because often most of them don’t really remember the applicant after the interview – unless the interview left a lasting impression.

Those who stand out positively in an interview also have a much better chance of being shortlisted afterwards. But how do you actually make a good impression in an interview in English?

The First Impression Counts

“How are you today?” do not answer with “Fine” or “Great”, but with “Everything is beautiful” or “It couldn’t be better”. A more creative answer to how you are doing will be remembered and raise additional questions. Why are you doing so well Mention that you are excited about the chance to introduce yourself to this company or give another positive reason.

Storytelling

To back up your claim, you should remember two to three examples in which you can prove your skills. To claim that someone can keep a cool head in sticky situations is much more anchored in the minds of recruiters if you can confirm this claim with a concrete example.

Use the Space and Your Skills

Do you claim in an English interview that you are good at solving problems? Then prove it! Ask the HR manager to be able to use the drawing board and draw up a solution – actions are not forgotten as quickly as words. This is of course also possible in the Skype interview. You should have pen and paper on hand for this.

Convince in The Group Interview

If you are interviewed together with others at the same time, there is usually a good reason for this: you want to see how the applicants treat others. So don’t interrupt anyone. On the contrary, be extremely nice to your competition. In a group discussion, you can compliment your competitors on their idea with “Good idea” and at the same time build on their thesis. Group interviews test your ability to work in a team. Candidates who make other ideas bad so that they can better represent themselves are usually sorted out very quickly.

Don’t Forget to Laugh

Most applicants look way too serious during an interview. Those who are happy and in a good mood at the interview convey to the HR manager that they are also in a good mood at work and nobody wants to work with someone who is constantly in a bad mood.

Thank You Letter After The Interview

This tip is in every application guide, but many do not stick to it. Thank you in a short e-mail about the nice conversation and briefly mention again what was discussed in the interview, in which you think why the company and you are a perfect match.
