Learning Types: The Best Learning Tips for Every Student!

Best Learning Tips: Everyone works differently, also when learning. So it’s no wonder that you can clearly identify different types of learner. In this article you will find out which learner type you belong to and which learning tips you should take to heart in order to get through the exam time. So in the future you will always know how to best prepare for your next learning session!

Overview of Different Learning Types: Best Learning Tips

Everyone learns differently. Preparing for the next exam will be much easier if you know your own strengths and weaknesses. Apart from your personal learning type, many other factors naturally play a role in successful exam preparation, including your own motivation to learn, your interests and your personality. But back to the learner types. Which are there anyway?

Auditory Learner:

The auditory type can easily take in, memorize and reproduce heard information. It is easy for him to understand and implement oral explanations. Auditory learner types quickly feel disturbed by ambient noises and do not like background music as they find it distracting.

This is How You Remember the Subject Matter as an Auditory Learner:

  • Listen to the learning material (for example via audio recordings of the lecture or learning CDs)!
  • If there are no recordings, then you can also record the learning material yourself (almost every smartphone already has a voice recorder app in the system, otherwise just download it!).
  • It often helps to read texts aloud to yourself.
  • Tell your friends and roommates about the material you have learned!
  • Go to the lecture and listen carefully!

Visual Learner:

The visual type learns most easily by reading information and observing courses of action. He can easily remember information he has seen. If you are a visual learner, you will probably find it relatively easy to prepare for the exam, as most of the materials are available in written form (e.g. scripts, books, slide sets, etc.). However, visual clutter can easily distract you! For example, it is hard to concentrate if your desk is cluttered.

As a Visual Learner, The Best Way to Learn Is:

  • Read through books, articles, and lecture summaries!
  • Observe the course of action closely!
  • You can easily memorize content that is visualized in the form of graphics or images.
  • Your learning aids are mainly books, index cards, sketches, slide sets and learning posters.

Motor Learning:

The motor type learns best practically – learning by doing! This type of learner lives from playing through and thus comprehending courses of action. Here it is essential to be involved in the learning process yourself and thus to gain experience in the subject area. If you are a motor learner, it will help you to try things out or play them through. You memorize the information by moving, acting and feeling !

This is the easiest way to internalize the material as a motor learner:

  • Re-enact a complex issue in a group game with fellow students!
  • Run distances, measure distances!
  • Try to recreate situations with objects!
  • If a situation cannot be acted out or experienced for yourself, then exercise also helps with learning.
  • Walk around the room, and combine the learning material with gestures and facial expressions!

Communicative Learner:

The communicative learner needs to exchange with others – he learns best through discussions and conversations

The linguistic processing of the learning material and the understanding in dialogue is important for this type of learner. If you are a communicative learner, then you probably don’t enjoy working for yourself at home or in the library. As an alternative, we suggest you organize yourself in study groups.

This is the Best Way to Memorize Things as a Communicative learner:

  • Exchange ideas on the subject with fellow students, professors or experts!
  • Establish a study group in which what has been learned is discussed!
  • Actively ask questions and contribute to the lecture!
  • Explain to others what you’ve learned and have them ask questions about it!
