How Many Titles Jurgen Klopp Won As A Coach?

There is no doubt that the German Jürgen Klopp is one of the coaches of the moment, and one of the most outstanding technical directors of the last decade, since he became known to the great European public with that Borussia Dortmund that made his own fans fall in love and strangers with such an entertaining style of play and gigantic merit. Today, Jurgen has transferred his style to the city of Liverpool, with which he dazzles the English and half the world.

Related on several occasions to the two biggest teams in our country, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, the German seems to have found in the house of The Beatles the last of his shoe, a place to live and be able to develop a project at a very long term, with which to be able to compete ‘on an equal footing with the great English teams and other European ocean liners.

And it is that Klopp’s teams have always stood out for a vertical, vigorous style of play, without reservations, without prisoners; with high pressure and a suffocating pace. The perfect ingredients to be able to enjoy really attractive matches day after day, being, therefore, one of the great representatives of the so-called Gegenpressing.

And, without a doubt, another of his great virtues is turning good (or even unknown) players into universal stars: Marco Reus, Robert Lewandowski, Gündogan, Gotze, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané… and those who are yet to come!

We review the career, titles and records of one of the most valued and charismatic coaches of the last football decade.

Jurgen Klopp’s Career:

Unlike other great coaches, like José Mourinho or Carlo Ancelotti; Jurgen Klopp’s career, up to now, is characterized by having directed very few teams; but, yes with a long and successful career in each and every one of them; always accompanied by his unparalleled charisma and contagious smile.

Mainz 05:

The good Jürgen Klopp ended his career as an active footballer in 2001, precisely, at Mainz 05, the club where he went directly to being a coach. The first of his great successes as a coach came at this club, which he managed to promote to the Bundesliga in 2004, being Mainz’s first participation in the German First Division. The following season, in fact, he even played in UEFA, where he was eliminated at the hands of Sevilla FC, who would win their first Europa League title that year.

However, a season later, his team suffered relegation to the German Second Division, and, after failing to promote the team again in 2008, Klopp would resign from his position, despite having the trust of the board, leaving as the coach in the club’s history who has held his position for the most years.

Titles of Jurgen Klopp As Coach of Borussia Dortmund:

The relegation suffered in one of his last seasons with Mainz did not cause his recognition to drop in the German football environment, which made it easier for one of the great German football clubs to call him to guide his destiny: Borussia Dortmund.

After ending his contractual relationship with Mainz, Jurgen signed a two-year deal with the Dortmund outfit, who had finished last season in a very disappointing 13th place. In his first two seasons as coach of Borussia Dortmund, Klopp notably improved the records of recent seasons, ranking him in 6th and 5th place, laying the foundations for the historic Dortmund that would come just after.

And so it was, how, in the 2011-2012 season, ten seasons after the last league title won by BVB, Dortmund managed to proclaim themselves Bundesliga champions again, against all odds, clearly imposing themselves on the almighty Bayern Munich; with a remarkable figure of 8 points of difference. But, Klopp’s achievements with the Dortmund team did not stop here: in the following season, 2012-2013, he would revalidate the title of Bundesliga champion, to which the German Cup champion had to be added, winning 5-2 in the final against Bayern itself; signing a historic double for the entity.

Already in the 2012-2013 financial year, Borussia could not regain the titles won in previous seasons, but they did manage to reach the final of the Champions League, the highest continental competition, taking Dortmund to the second European final of his story; in a historic matchup against Bayern Munich; that got out of hand due to Arjen Robben’s goal in the 89th minute. Along the way, Jürgen’s team eliminated Shakhtar Donetsk, and two Spanish teams: Pellegrini’s historic Málaga and Mourinho’s Real Madrid.

After these great successes, came a series of seasons in which Borussia Dortmund minimized their level to a large extent, caused by the departure of very important players in Klopp’s scheme, such as Mario Gotze or Robert Lewandowski, precisely, to their rival team; and the injuries of others, such as Gündogan. Thus, in the following two seasons, Dortmund fans had to settle for winning two German Super Cups, beating Bayern both times.

Finally, already in the 2014-2015 season, a horrible start to the championship leads Borussia to finish the first round of the Bundesliga in relegation positions; although the Dortmund board ratified Klopp. Despite the fact that he was able to redirect the situation to an acceptable 7th place, Jürgen left the Dortmenian club at the end of the season, to take a year off.

Jurgen Klopp’s Titles As Manager of Liverpool:

On October 8, 2015, Klopp’s magical story began with his current club, Liverpool, one of the two greats in England, which had fallen on hard times. We had to wait 20 days to see Jürgen’s first victory as coach of the ‘Pool’; 1-0 against Bournemouth, in the League Cup.

His first season at the helm of the English club was not as remarkable as the rest: he finished eighth in the Premier League; and in the Europa League they would reach the final, where they would be defeated, of course, by Sevilla FC. Of course, on his way to the final he left a few flashy rivals: in the round of 16, his eternal rival, Manchester United; in the quarterfinals, precisely, against his former team, Borussia Dortmund; and in the semifinals, against Villarreal.

The following season, 2016/2017, turned out better for the Reds, who managed to qualify for the Champions League, finishing the season in fourth position, a much better position than Liverpool had been getting used to by their fans in recent seasons.

On 17/18, one of the best versions of Klopp’s Liverpool began to be seen: although in the Premier League he would classify as fourth again; In the Champions League, the continental competition par excellence, they managed to reach the final, defeating Porto, Manchester City and Roma along the way. Already in the final, they would face Zidane’s Real Madrid, losing 3-1, in a match that is especially remembered for the poor performance of their goalkeeper, Karius, with two goals solely attributable to him.

In the penultimate season completed, 2018/2019, Liverpool continued to improve its performance in the two most important competitions in which it participates: the Premier League and the Champions League. In the English domestic championship, they would go on to finish second, adding a whopping 97 points, just one behind Pep Guardiola’s incredible City, who added 98. These 97 points are the third-best performance ever seen in the English league, second only for that Manchester City and the one from the previous season (17-18). With this score, Liverpool would have been champions in 25 of the 27 previous editions played.

However, the great joy come to achieving the ‘Orejona’, which highlighted especially the comeback in the semifinals against Barcelona of Lionel Messi, who had managed to prevail 3-0 in the first leg. In the Anfield game, perfect performance by Klopp’s team led to a 4-0 win and the final comeback. In the last game, held at the Wanda Metropolitano, they beat Tottenham (2-0) in the final.

But, above all, Jürgen Klopp’s best season as Red coach was 19-20. Still, in 2019, Liverpool would lift the European Super Cup, which they had not won since 2005, and the Club World Cup, a title hitherto unpublished in their showcases. Even with all this, the best news was yet to come: on June 26, 2020, and after a spectacular season, Liverpool was proclaimed champions of the English League after a curse of, nothing more and nothing less, 30 years; which was also the first Premier League in the history of the Reds, since its creation in 1992.

Finally, to this day, Klopp’s Liverpool continues to be one of the most dangerous, powerful and fearsome teams in the entire old continent.
