Live and Work Abroad: The Best of it, the Worst, & Everything in Between

Live and work Abroad: A question, emigration is great. More than half of People dream of going abroad for a longer period of time.

Live and Work Abroad:

In reality, however, only a small percentage realize the desire for a life far away. Because this also has its downsides. In the following, a career abroad lists the highlights, the downsides and everything in between.

The Best of living Abroad

See the World from a Completely Different Perspective

It is incredibly enriching to immerse yourself in another culture. It opens the eyes of many emigrants to the fact that there are other ways of life and everyday customs in the world that break up what they have been used to since then. Other climatic conditions and social systems influence people’s lives. Some eat only after 9 p.m., others always take off their shoes when entering an apartment. In some countries, nothing goes between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. because they have siesta. Experiencing completely different ways of life broadens your horizons enormously and places your own life in its place in the world.

Gaining a Sense of Independence

Finding your way in a strange environment, possibly even without perfect language skills, requires self-confidence. Opening a bank account, getting a work visa, negotiating with landlords and doing well at work is comparatively easy at home. However, this can be a real challenge elsewhere. Once this has been mastered and the start in the new home has been successful, a tremendous feeling of independence sets in. This goes hand in hand with the feeling of being able to do it anywhere, no matter where, regardless of other people or favorable circumstances.

Make Friends From all Over the World

Freshly arrived in their dream country, emigrants usually quickly meet like-minded people from other countries. Contacts with other newcomers, for whom everything is also unknown, are established through work or university. If you take the initial hurdles together and share your first experiences in your new place of residence, the affair can sometimes be intimate. In general, living abroad requires being much more open to a wide variety of people – which can turn out to be an enrichment. If you live in larger cities and find it difficult to get to know each other, you can go straight to meetings with other expats, for example through Internations.

Appreciating the Family More at Home

There is a saying that, in general, you often don’t appreciate what you have until you lose it. Sometimes you only notice in the distance how great your own family is. Anyone who has only sporadically telephoned their relatives at home will find themselves far away, longing for Skype calls with parents or siblings. And you can look forward to your vacation at home months in advance. The need to stay in contact generally increases immensely. And that’s a good thing because it creates gratitude.

Get an Appetite to Explore the World Even Further

Most people have a small amount of wanderlust in them. After the first stay abroad, however, the desire to travel often only really penetrates. Once infected, you want more. Experiencing other cultures is so refreshing and exciting that people living abroad want to see even more parts of the world.

Material Values Become Irrelevant

When a new life with two suitcases is possible, material things lose their meaning. In many cases, emigrants sell their belongings before they start again and initially have little in the dreamland. This is invigorating, because despite fewer belongings they do not miss anything and now they know that if necessary, they can be happy on an air mattress in a tiny apartment far away.

The Bad Sides

Not Everything is as Expected

Most emigrants do not initially live in a villa on the beach and have a Hollywood-like restart, in which even the great love in the new country may still be waiting. No, it is much more likely the air mattress or the stuffy hostel that you have to put up with. If the new position was touted as a “top opportunity in an international team”, it can also turn out to be a treadmill job in a measly desk box. But this is part of the process and strengthens the character.

The Bureaucratic Hurdles for many Things are very Large

Unfortunately, you can’t just get on a plane and settle somewhere else permanently. Emigration always involves a lot of paperwork. Getting a work visa in another country (and renewing it regularly) can become a total nightmare. Depending on the country, it costs nerves, time and possibly money to get all the necessary documents. In many cases, one certificate requires the other. For example, a regular income often has to be proven to open a bank account.

However, when hiring, employers need a local bank account to which they can transfer the wages. Landlords want to see proof of income and bank records. And if the process comes to a standstill with the work visa, the time in the stuffy hostel can stretch for weeks and months.

Life at Home Goes on without You

While the recently emigrant is still grappling with the madness of the authorities, life goes on for those at home without him. Friends get married, relatives have children, and grandparents die. Pictures of Christmas and birthday parties or without seeing one can be painful. One should be prepared for this.

Emergencies can be Very Expensive

If photos are available to be able to participate in the small events from a distance, there are circumstances where you have to be on site. For example, if a family member becomes seriously ill or has an accident, it requires prompt response. And last-minute flights that have to happen quickly can get really expensive. If you don’t have a budget for it, there is also the stress of having to raise this money somewhere. As an emigrant, one also continually feels guilty that one cannot take care of relatives in difficult situations.

Everything in Between

Put on Money buffers Before Emigrating

Emigrating is nice, but with a little financial security behind you, it’s even better. It would be a shame if emigration simply fails because you run out of money while waiting for a visa, job or apartment. It is just as tragic when there is no financial means for a possible sudden flight home and back.

Bring Documents up to Date Before Departure

It is absolutely advisable to extend your passport and driver’s license before you leave Your country, should either expire during your stay abroad. You may even be without a passport for a while and cannot leave the country in an emergency.

Take Important Things with You

Not everything is easily available everywhere in the world. Certain medications, for example, are better taken with you in advance. Emigrants should also pack their favorite shampoo or cosmetics if they don’t want to go without them in their dreamland.
