The Best Drama Series on Netflix: 20 Most Exciting New Series

Most Exciting New Series: The word “drama” is derived from ancient Greek means “action”. Seen in this way, almost all fictional television series with intact narrative threads would fall into the category considered here, but the current understanding of an episodic TV drama requires a little more: Only the best representatives of their kind trigger great emotions and surprise with clever revelations that turn the life of believable figures upside down, at least for the moment – who could switch off?

Most Exciting New Series

We take a look at 20 recommended most exciting new series.

1. Breaking Bad:

  • Thriller / Crime; with Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn

Let’s start with an indispensable milestone when it comes to the best drama series ever: “Breaking Bad” has set the bar for entertainment at lofty heights for both high quality and mass entertainment – proud 16 Emmy awards, two Golden Globes and ongoing admiration speak for themselves.

The focus of the plot is the docile teacher Walter White (Cranston), who has to face a cancer diagnosis and decides to provide for the financial security of his family. To this end, he and a student (Paul) get involved in crystal meth production, but as business success grows, his honorable motives increasingly take a back seat.

To complete the saga, Netflix is making the spinoff “Better Call Saul”, which is hardly less worth seeing, and the final feature film “El Camino” available!

2. Mad Men:

  • Historical Drama; with Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, John Slattery

“Mad Men” takes viewers off into the advertising industry of the sixties, which Don Draper (Hamm) is increasingly putting his stamp on. The always self-confident creative director is the guarantee of success for a New York agency, a role model for many upstart and married family man – at the same time, however, he is also a chronically unfaithful womanizer with a penchant for alcohol and a dark secret, the possible disclosure of which weighs heavily on him.

In addition to the fabulously charismatic focal point of the series, many other minor characters inevitably grow on the heart, while the script and set contribute significantly to the charm of the detailed journey through time. No less than six Emmys and five Golden Globes could be collected in this way!

3. Vikings:

  • History / Fantasy; with Travis Fimmel, Katheryn Winnick, Clive Standen

In the late eighth century, Ragnar Lodbrok (Fimmel) is a Viking who seeks more. To the west, to be precise: Inspired by a vision, the Northman would like to invade England, which is no longer so distant thanks to new possibilities, with all its fabulous riches. An ambitious undertaking that initially threatens to fail due to internal resistance. However, Ragnar doesn’t give up that easily …

Based on the traditions about the possibly really existing model, “Vikings” attaches minor importance to historical accuracy, but inspires its fans with proud figures and complex conflicts in an only supposedly simpler world.

4. Fargo:

  • Black Comedy; with Billy Bob Thornton, Kirsten Dunst, Ewan McGregor

Inspired by the cult film of the same name by the Coen brothers, the series adaptation also deals with comparatively inexperienced citizens who selfishly stick their toes in the murky pool of crime … and realize far too late that they are in reality long up to their necks. When a battered husband allows a hired killer to be the devil on his shoulder, a middle-class couple has to make the body of a syndicate member disappear, or two brothers are unable to resolve their feud with the best of intentions, disaster is on the way!

The individual seasons offer bizarre characters en masse, who provide twists on the running and should not only keep fans of the movie classic in a good mood for a long time.

5. The Americans:

  • Spy Thriller; with Keri Russel, Matthew Rhys, Holly Taylor

Elizabeth and Philip Jennings (Russel and Rhys) and their teenage children live in the suburbs of Washington, DC and lead peaceful family lives. The exciting game of hide-and-seek was honored with a Golden Globe for best drama series in 2019!

6. Sherlock:

  • Crime; with Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Andrew Scott

The master of his subject, who is rather difficult on a social level, is a well-known character whom film and television like to use again and again in various forms. As the name suggests, however, the successful English series “Sherlock” draws on the pioneer himself: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s highly talented private detective (Cumberbatch) and his loyal partner Watson (Freeman) work together with his loyal partner Watson (Freeman) through entertaining feature-length episodes.

In addition to the fantastically coordinated main actors and their sharp dialogues, sophisticated scripts and dynamic staging promise captivating cases.

The 15 months in the women’s prison tear her from her middle-class middle-class life in New York, which she has not necessarily prepared for the rough togetherness behind bars.

“OITNB” draws its tension not only from everyday prison life, but also from enlightening flashbacks. In addition, the Emmy-winning series is valued for its diverse cast!

8. Black Mirror:

  • Science fiction / Anthology; with Mackenzie Davis, Jesse Plemons, Bryce Dallas Howard

Since you are currently using a reasonably modern device to find out about the wide range of streaming services on offer, we assume that you can basically gain something from technical progress. Often times, however, incredible opportunities come with considerable risk – a lesson rarely more exciting than taught on Black Mirror. In individual episodes / short films, phenomena of media modernity are often only thought a tiny bit further in order to sometimes create tangible horror scenarios.

Celebrity guest stars are just the cherry on the dystopian cake given the clever, thought-provoking ideas in the script!

The relationship between the two is complicated by the fact that Clay is in a relationship with club matriarch Gemma Teller (Sagal) and is therefore Jax’s stepfather. Sooner or later, an open conflict seems inevitable, but rival gangs, investigative authorities and personal problems also keep the outlaws in suspense.

Tension on many fronts, which is effortlessly carried over to onlookers! Accompanied by a great soundtrack, “Hamlet” provides a loose template – more drama is hardly possible, right?

11. Ozark:

  • Crime; with Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Sofia Hublitz

The financial services provider Martin “Marty” Byrde (Bateman) denies his earnings, among other things, with money laundering for a Mexican cartel. When his business partner finishes in his own pocket, the consequences are serious. Around the Missouri summer resort, however, Marty is far from the only person with dubious intentions.

For some, “Ozark” was able to fill the vacuum created by “Breaking Bad”, but the multi-Emmy award-winning crime series stands on its own thanks to outstanding actors.

12. Marvel’s Daredevil:

  • Comic Adaptation; with Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jon Bernthal

With its own streaming service, Disney has effectively ended the cooperation between Marvel and Netflix. A loss that was regretted in many places – after all, we owe the collaboration in the form of “Daredevil” one of the most remarkable comic adaptations ever! During the day, Matt Murdock (Cox), who has been blind since childhood, stands up as a lawyer for people, but the frustrating limits of his possibilities are clearly shown.

Obviously, in addition to supernatural abilities, this also has information about the whereabouts of your friend, which significantly broadens the horizons of the young investigators!

Visually impressive adaptation of the novel of the same name by Richard K. Morgan.

16. House of Cards:

  • Political Thriller; with Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly

Francis “Frank” Underwood (Spacey) is the leader of the Democratic Party and has therefore long been at home on the political floor of Washington, DC. To call him a callous pragmatist would be the understatement of this list: scheming, vengeful and hungry for power, he and his hardly less devious wife Claire (Wright) form a calculating power couple, for whom no method is too shabby as long as it serves their own advantage.

Both of the main actors may never have been better, which is saying a lot in Spacey’s case. The multi-award-winning series breaks the fourth wall with style, scores with pointed dialogues and delivers political drama in perfection over long stretches!
