After Graduating From High School, Studying or Working Abroad: 15 Gap Year Possibilities

Studying or Working Abroad: Basically, the gap year means nothing more than making a conscious decision to leave a gap in your CV. A whole year is a good time window for a conscious break, but the gap year can also be longer or shorter. Depending on what you want to achieve with the gap year, you should plan this in advance in order to get the most out of your break.

After Graduating from High School Abroad: Studying or Working Abroad

The gap year after graduation is particularly popular. Anyone who has completed twelve years of school usually wants to relax first. The time before the Abitur exams should actually be spent preparing for the future, but most students simply have little time for this. If you want to study, you have to make sure that the numerus clausus is good enough to get a place in a coveted subject. But what if you don’t know what to do after graduating from high school? In such a case, a gap year can bring the lack of clarity.

After the Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree Abroad

A gap year between the Bachelor’s and Master’s can also help to be more clear about the future. Often students long for more time for themselves if the bachelor’s degree was too intensive and did not allow time to plan the future. Ideally, you should try out a profession in the gap year by later doing your specialization with a master’s degree.

Gap Year as a Break from Work

The famous burnout syndrome is an occasion for many to question their professional goals and to get rid of stress, but a new orientation in the professional sense can also be used for a gap year. A gap year during professional life is often called a sabbatical.Gap year as a break from work.

7 Things Everyone should do Before 7 a.m.

The famous burnout syndrome is an occasion for many to question their professional goals and to get rid of stress, but a new orientation in the professional sense can also be used for a gap year. A gap year during professional life is often called a sabbatical.

1. Work and Travel

The most popular for a gap year is a work and travel program because it allows one with a relatively cheap visa to work and travel for a year or two in a country like Australia, New Zealand, Canada etc. The great thing about it is that you can not only gain work experience and improve your language skills almost automatically, but also that you can finance traveling by doing odd jobs.

2. Language Trip

Some want to do it on the side, others prefer to proceed more strategically: to learn a language or to perfect it. Nowadays you can no longer do without English, so if you expose yourself to an English-speaking country, you can’t avoid learning the language. A language course can help you understand grammar right from the start. In addition, a language teacher can help you acquire the correct pronunciation .

3. Internship

An internship abroad or at home can be worthwhile, especially after graduating from high school or bachelor’s degree . If you want to invest more than three months for an internship, you should also ensure that the internship is properly paid. Because after a period of three months, pretty much every intern is well trained and serves the company as a worker.

4. World Travel

Now or never: Anyone who has always wanted to travel around the world should take a gap year. Anyone who works full-time knows that you can’t take vacation forever, and certainly not when you want. Anyone who works in an industry that runs at full speed during certain seasons, as in tourism, has to work when it is usually best outside. A gap year is ideal for traveling around the world.

5. Reduce Stress with a Yoga Retreat

If you want to leave the stress behind and actually want to do “nothing”, you might enjoy a yoga retreat. Together with others you do yoga for a few hours a day, eat healthy and take long walks. Yoga retreats in Bali or Thailand are particularly popular, because here you can take a relatively cheap longer vacation.

6. Vocational Training

Those who are actually satisfied in their current job and only want a short break can also use the time to advance their career. This quickly turns the gap into a career booster.

7. Learn a New Job

Anyone who has already quit their current job internally but does not yet know how to proceed professionally can use a gap year to find a career. Often the realization that you find yourself in a wrong job does not go hand in hand with the enlightenment for the actual calling.

8. Take Workshops or Seminars

If you want to learn, you don’t have to do it for your career.
A workshop or seminar on a topic that interests you very much can fulfill you holistically. Some examples of this could be a cooking class in Asia, a pastry seminar in France, a bartender training in Ireland or an art class anywhere in the world.

9. Realize Personal Projects

A gap year is there to take time for yourself and this can of course also be used to save your relationship, to be there for someone, to finally lose weight or to realize a long-cherished dream.

10. To Write a Book

You don’t just write a book on the side when you are studying or working full-time. If you are serious about your book idea, you can use a gap year to get it down on paper. The author Elizabeth Gilbert used a sabbatical to write “ Eat, Pray, Love ”.

11. The Leap into Independence

A year is a good time to see if self-employment can work out to stay afloat. As a freelancer you are your own boss and decide which job you accept and which not.

12. Establish Company

If you don’t want to live from job to job, you can of course also use a gap year to turn your dream of your own company into reality.

13. Research Project

Whether with an academic educational institution or on your own, if you want to research other cultures and record your results scientifically, you can use your gap year for a larger research project.

14. Voluntary Work

One selfless way to use your gap year is by volunteering . Volunteering with local aid organizations is most effective. It should be noted that some organizations prefer volunteer workers in some poor countries rather than educating and paying decent local residents.
