Similar to the original Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs are one of the iconic animated series of the 80s. What sounds like a classic sci-fi series turns into an animated superhero series thanks to the heroic Star Sheriffs. The interstellar space western can now also be seen on Amazon Prime.

The Japanese animation series Anime Sei Jūshi Bismarck (1984) is the model for Saber Rider and the star sheriffs – despite being produced in the USA, the series is also visually based on the Japanese anime style.

Between 1987 and 1988 a total of 52 episodes were produced in two seasons of Saber Rider. If you want a futuristic superhero anime, the cult series Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs are the right choice.

The series, now available on Amazon Prime, tells the story of the idealistic scientist Niles Caulder, who leads the team of superheroes made up of Robotman, Elasti-Woman, Crazy Jane and Negative Man. But unlike many superheroes, they do not reap glamor and admiration, but rather the existence as socially outcasts.

The cast of the series includes Alan Tudyk (Star Wars: Rogue One, Firefly: Der Aufbruch der Serenity), Diane Guerrero (Orange is the new Black), Brendan Fraser (The Mummy, LA Crash) and Bond actor Timothy Dalton (Chuck, Penny Dreadful). The creative mind behind the series is writer-producer Jeremy Carver (Supernatural, Being Human).

However, the superhero series available on Amazon Prime relies on computer-animated storytelling.

The five seasons of the series tell of the teenage years of the ninjutsu-powerful mutated turtles, whose home is the sewers of New York. When the four pizza-loving heroes explore the upper world for the first time with the consent of their mentor Splinter, the nasty shredder and his henchmen appear on the scene.

The series, which has appeared in over seven seasons, starts at the very beginning: after a lightning strike, Barry Allen wakes up from his coma and discovers his new superpower. None other than Seth Rogen (Superbad, Sausage Party) teamed up with Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Sausage Party) and Eric Kripke (Supernatural) in 2019 to create the unusual superhero series The Boys. The Amazon Original is based on the comic of the same name by Garth Ennis (Judge Dredd, Hellblazer) and Darick Robertson.

In the narrative world of The Boys, superheroes are revered like superstars, their power and influence know hardly any limits. When the simple salesman Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) loses his girlfriend to a superhero, he allies with Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) in order to get revenge on the mighty.

If you take it seriously, The Boys is actually an anti-superhero series that deals with the consequences of superhero-like omnipotence. The Boys mixed satire with dramedy and caused an international sensation with the first season. Since the release, the original from Amazon has also been available on Amazon Prime.

The famous action series was nominated for three Primetime Emmys, the intro alone is one of the cult moments of American television entertainment.

Five seasons with 98 episodes offer an insight into the audiovisual adventures of the four heroes Hannibal (George Peppard), Howling Mad (Dwight Schulz), BA (Mr. T) and Faceman (Dirk Benedict), who are, however, in the sights of the Military stand. If you want a slightly different and less obvious superhero series, you shouldn’t miss the cult series of the 80s, which is important for pop culture.

The series by Ben Edlund (Angel: Hunter of Darkness, Gotham) is based on his comic series of the same name, which debuted in 1986 and was filmed in a first series in 2001. The Tick combines comedy with action and has been nominated for two Primetime Emmys.
