Injections with vitamin B12 should be able to help you lose weight quickly, you read again and again – especially in the USA. There, the weekly B12 shot is already routine for many overweight people. They partially inject themselves, week after week, month after month. Does the vitamin actually help you lose weight?
How Vitamin B12 Could Help You Lose Weight
Vitamin B12 is a very important vitamin that dispels fatigue, increases energy levels, and boosts metabolism. All of these properties suggest that vitamin B12 can support weight loss. Because if you are tired and listless and suffer from a slow metabolism, you will naturally gain weight – and lose weight again in no time if the situation is reversed.
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin from the group of B vitamins. His range of tasks is very broad. For example, it is involved in blood formation, the structure of DNA, and the energy production of the cell. The vitamin is also at least as important for heart health as it is for the brain.
Vitamin B12 deficiency affects many people
Vitamin B12 is found in relevant amounts almost exclusively in animal foods, which is why it is also considered a critical vital substance for people with a purely plant-based diet. However, vitamin B12 deficiency is also widespread in the “normal” eating population, especially among the elderly and people with chronic digestive problems. Medications such as acid blockers and the diabetes drug metformin also promote vitamin B12 deficiency. Here you will find information on how to remedy and diagnose a vitamin B12 deficiency.
In the home test (from Medivere Diagnostics ), which you can order online, you can also test for a vitamin B12 deficiency via the urine. The doctor examines the B12 level in the blood.
Vitamin B12 and lipid metabolism
Studies indicate that vitamin B12 can directly affect fat metabolism. For example, in 2020 the specialist journal Nutrients read that a number of epidemiological studies and animal studies show a connection between vitamin B12 and metabolic syndrome. The metabolic syndrome describes the simultaneous presence of obesity, diabetes (or its precursors), elevated blood lipid levels, and high blood pressure.
Low vitamin B12 levels are particularly common among type 2 diabetics. And children whose mothers had low vitamin B12 levels during pregnancy often show excess fat storage. In 2017, 256 children showed that those with low vitamin B12 levels also tended to have a higher BMI than normal-weight children.
In August 2013, Turkish scientists used data from almost 1,000 study participants to explain that low vitamin B12 levels are associated with a greater risk of obesity. Several animal studies have also shown that a B12 deficiency leads to significant obesity, but it was often only a pronounced deficiency.
Conversely, it is known that people with a balanced vitamin B12 level have a lower risk of becoming overweight – which e.g. B. a 2019 study with over 9,000 subjects showed.
B vitamins boost metabolism
But does the administration of vitamin B12 also lead to weight loss and the breakdown of excess body fat? Unfortunately, there is no clear evidence for this. However, a 2018 study on rats found something interesting.
With a high-fat diet, the rodents in the vitamin B group gained significantly less weight than in a control group that did not receive any B vitamins. Elevated levels of the enzymes that boost metabolism have also been observed in the B vitamin group ( 5Trusted Source. This could indicate that with a good supply of vitamin B you can eat more calories without rushing apart.
Vitamin B12 deficiency: the symptoms
In its severe form, vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to what is known as pernicious anemia. With this problem, the number of red blood cells decreases, while the remaining red blood cells increase in size. Pernicious anemia can bring with it various symptoms, which, however, are not particularly affected by e.g. B. a pronounced iron deficiency anemia:
- shortness of breath
- balance disorders
- memory problems
Of course, vitamin B12 deficiency does not always lead to pernicious anemia, but only when it is advanced and has persisted for a long period of time. The usual symptoms of a developing deficiency, i.e. a falling B12 level, are initially only tiredness, lack of energy, and problems with maintaining a healthy weight ( 11 ).
Losing weight with vitamin B12 deficiency
However, things are not quite as uniform and simple. Because a vitamin B12 deficiency can also lead to a loss of appetite in some people. If you don’t have an appetite, you eat less and lose weight as a result. Vitamin B12 deficiency can therefore also lead to unwanted weight loss in some people.
How to lose weight with vitamin B12
So if you would like to lose weight and have not been so successful with it so far, it could also be due to a vitamin B12 deficiency. Therefore, have your vitamin B12 level checked by a doctor.
If low values are found, you can raise them with a course of injections (at least 8 injections – 1 to 2 per week). After a further check, you can then decide whether you need further injections or whether it could also be sufficient to switch to capsules, e.g. B. on the high-dose vitamin B12 complex capsules of effective nature, which provide 1000 µg of vitamin B12 per day.
However, vitamin B12 alone will not be enough for successful weight loss.
