What Is A Beep Test Calculator?
A beep test calculator turns your beep test score into numbers you can use. You enter the level and shuttle where you stopped, and the beep test calculator works out your estimated VO2max, the total distance you ran, your running time and your final speed.
This beep test calculator is built for football. As well as VO2max, it rates your beep test score for your position, from needs work to elite, shows the level you need for the next rating and gives you training tips to get there. You can also download your beep test result as a PDF to share with your coach or keep as a record.
Use the beep test calculator after every test, for example in pre-season, mid-season and at the end of the season, to see whether your fitness is going up.
What Is The Beep Test?
The beep test, also called the multistage fitness test, 20 m shuttle run or bleep test, is one of the most common fitness tests in football. Players run back and forth between two lines 20 metres apart, reaching the line before each beep. The beeps get closer together every level, so you have to run faster and faster.
The test starts at a gentle 8.0 km/h and gets 0.5 km/h faster with each new level, which lasts about a minute. You keep going until you can’t reach the line in time twice in a row. Your score is the last level and shuttle you completed.
Because it is cheap, needs only a flat 20 m space and can test a whole squad at once, clubs and academies use it to check aerobic fitness in pre-season and track progress through the year.
How To Do The Beep Test
Set up a fair beep test in a few minutes.
- Mark 20 metres: use a tape measure and put cones on two lines exactly 20 m apart on a flat, non-slip surface.
- Play the audio: use an official beep test recording or app so the beeps match the standard levels.
- Warm up: do 10 to 15 minutes of easy jogging, mobility and a few short sprints.
- Run to the beep: reach the line with one foot before each beep, turn and run back.
- Stop rule: you are out after failing to reach the line in time twice in a row.
- Record your score: write down the last level and shuttle you completed, then enter it in the beep test calculator above.
For a fair comparison, do every beep test on the same surface, at a similar time of day and with the same warm-up.
How The Beep Test Calculator Works Out VO2max
Example: a player with a beep test score of level 12, shuttle 5.
| Step | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Shuttle Divider | Level × 0.4325 + 7.0048 | 12 × 0.4325 + 7.0048 = 12.195 |
| Continuous Score | Level + shuttle ÷ divider | 12 + 5 ÷ 12.195 = 12.41 |
| VO2max | 3.46 × continuous score + 12.2 | 3.46 × 12.41 + 12.2 = 55.1 ml/kg/min |
| Total Distance | All shuttles completed × 20 m | 2220 m |
This is the same calculation the beep test calculator runs for you. VO2max is the most oxygen your body can use during hard exercise, measured in millilitres per kilogram of body weight per minute. A higher VO2max means a bigger aerobic engine, which helps you keep running hard and recover faster between sprints.

Good Beep Test Scores For Footballers
| Rating | Male Outfield | Female Outfield |
|---|---|---|
| Elite / Professional | Level 14+ | Level 12+ |
| Semi-Pro | Level 12 to 14 | Level 10 to 12 |
| Good Amateur | Level 10 to 12 | Level 8 to 10 |
| Recreational | Level 8 to 10 | Level 6 to 8 |
| Needs Work | Below level 8 | Below level 6 |
- Goalkeepers: targets are about one level lower, because the position needs less running.
- Midfielders: targets are about half a level higher, because they usually cover the most distance.
- Defenders and forwards: use the outfield targets above.
The beep test calculator uses these ratings for your result. They are GlobeHour benchmarks to help you set targets, not official standards. Clubs and coaches often set their own pass marks.
Tips To Improve Your Beep Test Score
- Do 4 × 4 minute hard intervals with 3 minutes easy jogging, twice a week.
- Play small-sided games to build match fitness and skill together.
- Practise quick, low turns with one foot on the line.
- Run the early levels relaxed. Don’t arrive at the line too early.
- Add repeated sprint work, such as 6 × 30 m with short rests.
- Warm up well for 10 to 15 minutes before testing.
- Test on the same surface and in similar shoes each time.
- Retest every 6 to 8 weeks to see real progress.
How Accurate Is The Beep Test Calculator?
The beep test calculator is only as accurate as the test itself. The beep test is a good field estimate of aerobic fitness, but it isn’t a lab test. Motivation, turning skill, the running surface, the weather and even how tired you are can change your score by a level or more. Results are most useful when you compare yourself with your own past scores under the same conditions.
The test also measures only one part of football fitness. Speed, repeated-sprint ability, strength and agility matter too, so use the beep test alongside other tests.
Beep Test Calculator FAQ
What Is A Good Beep Test Score For Football?
For male outfield players, level 10 to 12 is a good amateur score, 12 to 14 is semi-pro and level 14 or higher is elite. For female players, the same ratings are about two levels lower.
What Is A Beep Test Calculator?
A beep test calculator turns your beep test level and shuttle into an estimated VO2max, total distance and running time. This one also rates your beep test score for your football position.
Is The Beep Test Calculator Free?
Yes. The beep test calculator is completely free, needs no sign-up and works on phones, tablets and computers.
Is The Beep Test The Same As The Bleep Test?
Yes. The beep test, bleep test, multistage fitness test, 20 m shuttle run and PACER test all use the same idea of running 20 m shuttles to beeps that get faster. This beep test calculator uses the standard 21-level version.
What Does A Score Like 12.5 Mean?
It means level 12, shuttle 5. It is not a decimal, so 12.10 is higher than 12.9. Enter the level and shuttle separately in the calculator.
How Is VO2max Worked Out From The Beep Test?
The calculator turns your level and shuttle into a continuous score, then uses the Ramsbottom equation: VO2max = 3.46 × score + 12.2. It is an estimate, not a lab measurement.
How Many Levels Does The Beep Test Have?
The standard 20 m test has 21 levels. Each level lasts about a minute and gets 0.5 km/h faster, starting at 8.0 km/h.
Which Position Needs The Highest Beep Test Score?
Midfielders usually need the highest score because they cover the most distance in a match. Goalkeepers need the lowest.
How Can I Improve My Beep Test Score?
Do high-intensity intervals twice a week, play small-sided games, and practise smooth turns and even pacing. Most players can improve within 6 to 8 weeks.
