How Aggregate Scores Work In Two-Leg Ties

One simple sum, then tie-breakers if it’s level.

About The Tool

What Is An Aggregate Score Calculator?

An aggregate score calculator works out the combined score of a two-leg tie, the format used in many cup knockout rounds and play-offs. Each team plays one match at home and one away, and the goals from both matches are added together. The team with the higher aggregate score goes through.

When the aggregate is level, things get trickier. Some competitions still use the away goals rule, where the team that scored more goals away from home wins. Others, including all UEFA club competitions since 2021/22, go straight to extra time and then penalties. This aggregate score calculator lets you choose the rule, then shows the winner and exactly how the tie was decided.

Second leg coming up? Choose “Only Leg 1” and the aggregate score calculator shows a colour-coded grid of 36 second leg results, so you can see what your team needs.

Rules

Two-Leg Tie-Breakers Explained

The aggregate score calculator uses these rules, in this order.

➕

Aggregate Score

Always first

Add each team’s goals from both legs. More goals wins the tie, whatever happened in each match.

  • Example: 2-1 and 1-1 = 3-2 aggregate
✈️

Away Goals

Only in some competitions

If the aggregate is level, the team with more away goals goes through. UEFA abolished this rule for its club competitions from 2021/22.

  • Old UEFA rule: away goals in extra time counted too
⏱️

Extra Time

30 minutes

Two halves of 15 minutes at the end of the second leg. Goals in extra time are added to the aggregate.

  • Tip: enter only the extra-time goals in the tool
🥅

Penalty Shootout

The final decider

Five kicks each, then sudden death. Shootout goals decide the winner but don’t change the aggregate score.

  • Tip: enter the final shootout score, like 4-3
Tips

Tips For Two-Leg Ties

  • Always enter Team A as the side playing at home in the first leg.
  • Enter the second leg score after 90 minutes, not after extra time.
  • Only enter extra-time goals in the extra-time box.
  • Check whether your competition uses away goals before you calculate.
  • A 1-0 home win is a slender lead: a 1-0 away defeat means extra time.
  • Without away goals, a score draw in the second leg is no longer an advantage.
  • Use the leg 2 grid to see how many results suit your team.
  • Share the result or PDF with your team or league after the match.
FAQ

Aggregate Score Calculator FAQ

What Is An Aggregate Score Calculator?

An aggregate score calculator adds up the goals from both legs of a two-leg tie and tells you who goes through. This one also handles away goals, extra time and penalties, and shows what each team needs in the second leg.

Is The Aggregate Score Calculator Free?

Yes. The aggregate score calculator is completely free, needs no sign-up and works on phones, tablets and computers.

How Is An Aggregate Score Calculated?

Add each team’s goals from the first leg and the second leg. For example, if Team A win 2-1 at home and draw 1-1 away, they win 3-2 on aggregate.

Does The Away Goals Rule Still Exist?

UEFA scrapped the away goals rule in all its club competitions from the 2021/22 season. Some other competitions and local cups still use it, so the aggregate score calculator lets you switch it on or off.

What Happens If The Aggregate Score Is Level?

Without away goals, the second leg goes to 30 minutes of extra time. If it’s still level after extra time, a penalty shootout decides the winner.

Do Extra-Time Goals Count Towards The Aggregate?

Yes. Goals in extra time are added to the aggregate score. Under the old UEFA away goals rule, an away goal scored in extra time also counted double.

Do Penalty Shootout Goals Count In The Aggregate?

No. Shootout goals only decide the winner. The aggregate stays as it was at the end of extra time, for example 3-3, with the winner going through on penalties.

What Does My Team Need In The Second Leg?

Choose “Only Leg 1 Played” and enter the first leg score. The aggregate score calculator shows every second leg score from 0-0 to 5-5 and whether it sends your team through or into extra time.

Which Team Plays At Home In Each Leg?

Team A plays at home in the first leg and Team B plays at home in the second leg. Extra time and penalties are played at the end of the second leg.

Can I Download The Result?

Yes. Download a PDF with both legs, the aggregate breakdown and how the tie was decided, or the full second leg scenario grid.

Who Goes Through?

Enter both legs and the aggregate score calculator gives you the answer.
