What Is A Knockout Bracket Generator?
A knockout bracket generator is a tool that turns a list of teams into a single-elimination tournament bracket. In a knockout tournament, the loser of each match is out and the winner moves on, round after round, until only the champion is left.
Drawing a tournament bracket by hand is easy with 8 or 16 teams, but it gets tricky with numbers like 10, 13 or 22. You need to work out the bracket size, how many byes to give, who gets them and how to keep the best teams apart. This knockout bracket generator does all of that for you in one click.
Once the bracket is made, you can click the winner of each match or type the scores, and the knockout bracket generator moves the winners into the next round. It also handles the third place match, shows your progress and saves everything in your browser, so you can update the bracket as the tournament goes on.
Unlike a blank printable tournament bracket template, this bracket generator works out the byes and seeding for you, and the PDF it makes always matches your exact number of teams.
How Byes Work In A Knockout Bracket
Bracket size, byes, rounds and matches for common team numbers.
| Teams | Bracket Size | Byes | Rounds | Matches |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 teams | 4 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 4 teams | 4 | 0 | 2 | 3 |
| 5 teams | 8 | 3 | 3 | 4 |
| 6 teams | 8 | 2 | 3 | 5 |
| 7 teams | 8 | 1 | 3 | 6 |
| 8 teams | 8 | 0 | 3 | 7 |
| 10 teams | 16 | 6 | 4 | 9 |
| 12 teams | 16 | 4 | 4 | 11 |
| 16 teams | 16 | 0 | 4 | 15 |
| 20 teams | 32 | 12 | 5 | 19 |
| 24 teams | 32 | 8 | 5 | 23 |
| 32 teams | 32 | 0 | 5 | 31 |
| 48 teams | 64 | 16 | 6 | 47 |
| 64 teams | 64 | 0 | 6 | 63 |
A knockout bracket works best with 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 teams. With any other number, the knockout bracket generator rounds up to the next bracket size and gives the extra spots as byes. A team with a bye goes straight into round two. Byes are only ever given in the first round, so no team gets more than one.
How Seeding Works In The Bracket Generator
Seeding ranks the teams so the strongest don’t knock each other out early. The knockout bracket generator uses the standard method: seed 1 plays the lowest seed, seed 2 plays the second lowest, and so on, with seeds 1 and 2 placed in opposite halves so they can only meet in the final.
| Bracket Size | First-Round Matches (Top To Bottom) |
|---|---|
| 8 Teams | 1 v 8, 4 v 5, 2 v 7, 3 v 6 |
| 16 Teams | 1 v 16, 8 v 9, 4 v 13, 5 v 12, 2 v 15, 7 v 10, 3 v 14, 6 v 11 |
When there are byes, the top seeds get them. For example, with 6 teams in a seeded draw, seeds 1 and 2 get byes into the semi-finals while seeds 3 to 6 play first.

Third Place Match
Optional extra gameThe two losing semi-finalists play for third place. Turn it on or off in step one.
- Needs: at least 4 teams
- Adds: one extra match
How Many Matches In A Knockout Tournament?
Every match knocks out exactly one team, and every team except the champion is knocked out once. So a knockout tournament always has one fewer match than the number of teams. 8 teams play 7 matches, 16 teams play 15 and 32 teams play 31. Add one more if you play a third place match.
The number of rounds is the power of 2 that fits your bracket size: 8 teams need 3 rounds, 16 need 4, 32 need 5 and 64 need 6. The knockout bracket generator shows the rounds, matches and byes live as you type your teams.
Tips For Running A Knockout Tournament
- Agree the rules for draws first: extra time, penalties or both.
- Seed teams by last season’s results or a quick group stage.
- Share the bracket PDF with teams before the first match.
- Leave rest time between rounds for tired players.
- Enter scores straight after each game so nothing is missed.
- Use the third place match so semi-finalists play twice.
- Print the bracket large and pin it up at the venue.
- Use the knockout bracket generator’s New Draw for a live, fair draw.
