What Is A League Schedule Maker?
A league schedule maker is a tool that creates a fixture list for a league. You type your teams, and the league schedule maker works out who plays who on each matchday so that every team meets every other team. This format is called a round robin, and it is how most football leagues around the world are run.
Writing a league schedule by hand takes a long time and is easy to get wrong. Teams end up playing twice on the same day, some meet twice while others never meet, or one team gets far more home games. This league schedule maker uses the proven circle method, so every pairing appears exactly once, no team plays twice on one matchday and home and away games are shared out fairly.
Once your fixtures are ready, you can type in the scores and the league schedule maker builds the points table for you, with played, won, drawn, lost, goals, goal difference, points and recent form. Everything is saved in your browser, so you can update it after every matchday.
How Many Matches And Matchdays In A League?
Matchdays and matches for common league sizes.
| Teams | Matchdays (Single) | Matches (Single) | Matchdays (Double) | Matches (Double) | Bye |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 teams | 3 | 6 | 6 | 12 | No |
| 5 teams | 5 | 10 | 10 | 20 | Yes |
| 6 teams | 5 | 15 | 10 | 30 | No |
| 8 teams | 7 | 28 | 14 | 56 | No |
| 10 teams | 9 | 45 | 18 | 90 | No |
| 12 teams | 11 | 66 | 22 | 132 | No |
| 14 teams | 13 | 91 | 26 | 182 | No |
| 16 teams | 15 | 120 | 30 | 240 | No |
| 18 teams | 17 | 153 | 34 | 306 | No |
| 20 teams | 19 | 190 | 38 | 380 | No |
A single round robin has teams × (teams − 1) ÷ 2 matches. With an even number of teams there are teams − 1 matchdays. With an odd number there is one extra matchday, because one team rests each time. A double round robin doubles everything. The league schedule maker shows these numbers live as you type your teams.
Single Or Double Round Robin?
Single Round Robin
Play each team onceEvery team plays every other team one time. It is quick and works well for short seasons or tournaments over a weekend.
- Best for: short leagues, cups with a league stage
- 10 teams: 9 matchdays, 45 matches
Double Round Robin
Home and awayTeams meet twice, once at home and once away, like most national leagues. The second half mirrors the first with venues swapped.
- Best for: full seasons and fair home advantage
- 10 teams: 18 matchdays, 90 matches
Home And Away Balance
Fair venuesThe league schedule maker shares home games out evenly and avoids long runs of home or away matches for any team.
- Single: home games differ by one at most
- Double: every team has the same number
Byes For Odd Numbers
Rest matchdayWith 5, 7 or 9 teams, one team sits out each matchday. Every team gets the same number of byes across the season.
- Shown as: “Bye” under each matchday
- Fair: one bye per team per round of fixtures
How The Points Table Works
Every time you enter a score, the league schedule maker updates the points table. Teams get 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw by default, which is the system used in almost all football leagues. You can switch to 2 points for a win if your league uses the older system.
When teams are level on points, the table is sorted by these tie-breakers, in order:
- Goal difference: goals scored minus goals conceded.
- Goals scored: the team that scored more goals goes higher.
- List order: if still level, the team listed first stays above.
The Form column shows each team’s last five results as W, D or L, so you can see at a glance who is in good form. Some leagues use head-to-head results as a tie-breaker, so check your own league rules before the final matchday.
How The League Schedule Maker Builds Fixtures
The league schedule maker uses the circle method, the classic way to make a round robin schedule. One team stays in place while the others rotate one step each matchday, like players moving round a table. Each rotation gives a new set of pairings, and after one full turn every team has met every other team exactly once.
If you have an odd number of teams, the league schedule maker adds an empty slot. Whoever is paired with the empty slot has a bye that matchday. Home and away are then chosen so the team that played away last time is at home next, keeping venues balanced. Choose Random order and the league schedule maker shuffles the teams first, giving a fresh set of fixtures each time you click Shuffle.
