What Is The Football Points Calculator?
The GlobeHour Football Points Calculator turns a team’s wins, draws and losses into league points. It’s perfect for checking a league table, planning a title push or working out how many points a team needs to stay up.
Beyond the total, it shows points per game, the share of available points won, how many points have been dropped, the highest total still possible and where the current pace would finish the season. Enter a target and it tells you exactly how many more points, wins and draws are needed. It works with the standard 3-1-0 system, the old 2-1-0 system or any custom system, and it can handle points deductions too.
Football Points Formulas
Example: a team with 18 wins, 7 draws and 5 losses after 30 of 38 games, aiming for 80 points.
| Measure | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Points | Wins × 3 + draws × 1 | 18 × 3 + 7 = 61 |
| Points Per Game | Points ÷ games played | 61 ÷ 30 = 2.03 |
| Points Won | Points ÷ (games × 3) × 100 | 61 ÷ 90 = 67.8% |
| Points Dropped | Games × 3 − points | 90 − 61 = 29 |
| Maximum Possible | Points + games left × 3 | 61 + 8 × 3 = 85 |
| Projected Total | Points + points per game × games left | 61 + 2.03 × 8 ≈ 77 |
| Points Needed | Target − points | 80 − 61 = 19 |
| Required Points Per Game | Points needed ÷ games left | 19 ÷ 8 = 2.38 |
To reach 80 points, the team needs 7 wins from the last 8 games, or at least 6 wins and 1 draw. Under the old 2-1-0 system, the same record would be worth 43 points.
How Many Points Do You Need?
In the Premier League, champions have averaged 87.7 points, according to the Premier League. The lowest title-winning total is 75 points (Manchester United, 1996/97) and the record is 100 (Manchester City, 2017/18).
At the other end, the team finishing 18th has averaged about 34.5 points across 38-game seasons, according to The Analyst. The famous 40-point mark is usually more than enough to stay up, which is why the calculator offers quick 40 and 88 point targets.
3 Points Vs 2 Points For A Win
Under the old system, a win was worth 2 points and a draw 1, so a draw earned half as much as a win. Moving to 3 points made a win worth three times a draw, rewarding teams that go for victory.
- 3-1-0: the standard system in almost every league today.
- 2-1-0: the old system, useful for comparing historic seasons.
- Custom: for leagues and tournaments with their own rules, such as bonus points.
The points won percentage always compares the total with the maximum possible under the chosen system, so it’s a fair way to compare teams across systems.
