What Is Goals Per Game?
Goals per game is the average number of goals a player or team scores in each match they play. It’s the simplest way to compare scorers who have played a different number of games. A striker with 18 goals in 30 games averages 0.60 goals per game, which is better than 20 goals in 40 games (0.50).
The GlobeHour Goals Per Game Calculator gives you that number and much more. Add minutes to get goals per 90, add penalty goals to see the non-penalty rate, add assists for goal involvements per game, or switch to team mode to include goals conceded and goal difference. Enter the games remaining to project a final total and see how many goals are needed to hit a target.
Goals Per Game Formulas
Example player: 18 goals in 30 games, 2,400 minutes, 3 penalty goals, 6 assists, 8 games left and a target of 0.7 per game.
| Measure | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Goals Per Game | Goals ÷ games | 18 ÷ 30 = 0.60 |
| Games Per Goal | Games ÷ goals | 30 ÷ 18 = 1.67 |
| Goals Per 90 | Goals × 90 ÷ minutes | 18 × 90 ÷ 2,400 = 0.68 |
| Minutes Per Goal | Minutes ÷ goals | 2,400 ÷ 18 = 133 |
| Non-Penalty Per Game | (Goals − penalty goals) ÷ games | 15 ÷ 30 = 0.50 |
| Goals + Assists Per Game | (Goals + assists) ÷ games | 24 ÷ 30 = 0.80 |
| Projected Total | Goals + goals per game × games left | 18 + 0.60 × 8 = 22.8 ≈ 23 |
| Goals Needed For Target | Target × total games − goals | 0.7 × 38 − 18 = 8.6, so 9 |
What Is A Good Goals Per Game Ratio?
For players, it depends heavily on position. A centre forward is expected to score far more often than a defender, so always compare players in similar roles. The calculator uses this simple guide for players:
| Label | Goals Per Game | Over 38 Games |
|---|---|---|
| World Class | 0.80 or more | 30+ goals |
| Elite Scorer | 0.50 to 0.79 | 19 to 30 goals |
| Regular Scorer | 0.30 to 0.49 | 11 to 18 goals |
| Occasional Scorer | 0.15 to 0.29 | 6 to 11 goals |
| Rare Scorer | Under 0.15 | Under 6 goals |
For teams, the benchmark is the league average. Premier League matches averaged 2.93 goals in 2024/25, which works out at about 1.47 goals per team per game. A team scoring 1.80 per game is well above that.
Goals Per Game Vs Goals Per 90
Goals per game counts every appearance the same, whether a player started and played 90 minutes or came on for the last five. That can make substitutes look worse than they really are.
Goals per 90 fixes this by using minutes played. It shows how many goals a player would score in a full match at their current rate. In the example, the player averages 0.60 goals per game but 0.68 goals per 90, because they didn’t play the full 90 minutes in every game.
Goals Per Game For Teams
In team mode, enter goals scored, games played and, if you have it, goals conceded. The calculator then shows:
- Goals per game: how many goals the team scores in an average match.
- Conceded per game: how many goals the team lets in per match.
- Goal difference per game: goals scored minus conceded, divided by games.
For example, a team with 54 goals scored and 33 conceded in 30 games averages 1.80 goals per game, concedes 1.10 and has a goal difference of +0.70 per game.
Tips To Score More Goals Per Game
- Get into the penalty box more often, where most goals are scored.
- Work on first-time finishing from crosses and cut-backs.
- Hit the target, as shots off target can never become goals.
- Make runs across defenders to lose your marker.
- Follow up every shot for rebounds and loose balls.
- Practise penalties so you can take them with confidence.
- Track your goals per game across the season to spot trends.
- Teams: create clear chances rather than just more shots.
