What Position Do You Play?
Each position has a slightly different typical body fat range.

Use a tape measure, skinfold calipers, or just your height and weight.
Tape Measurements (cm, relaxed, standing tall)
Skinfolds (mm, right side of the body, average of two readings)
No Extra Measurements Needed
The BMI method uses only your age, height and weight. It is quick, but it often reads high for muscular players.

Typical Body Fat For Footballers By Position
Midfielders are usually the leanest, goalkeepers carry a little more. Women naturally have higher healthy ranges than men.

What Is A Healthy Body Fat Percentage For A Footballer?
Body fat percentage tells you how much of your body weight is fat. The rest is lean mass: muscle, bone, organs and water. For footballers it is a more useful number than weight alone, because two players can weigh the same but have very different builds.
Football is a game of sprints, jumps, turns and duels. Carrying less unnecessary fat makes all of those easier, which is why professional clubs track body composition through the season. But lower is not always better. Players need some body fat to stay healthy, recover well and stay strong in contact.
This calculator estimates your body fat with one of three methods, works out your fat mass and lean mass, and compares the result with the typical range for your position. Add a goal body fat to see the weight you would be at that level while keeping your current lean mass.
How Body Fat Is Calculated
Example: a 24-year-old male midfielder, 180 cm tall, 75 kg, neck 38 cm, waist 80 cm.
| Step | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Tape (Men) | 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log(height)) − 450 | 12.1% body fat |
| Tape (Women) | 495 ÷ (1.29579 − 0.35004 × log(waist + hips − neck) + 0.22100 × log(height)) − 450 | Uses hips as well |
| Skinfold | Sum of 3 skinfolds → body density (Jackson-Pollock) → 495 ÷ density − 450 (Siri) | Chest, abdomen, thigh for men |
| BMI Estimate | 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × age − 10.8 × sex − 5.4 (sex: men 1, women 0) | Quick but rough |
| Fat Mass | Weight × body fat % ÷ 100 | 75 × 12.05% = 9.0 kg |
| Lean Mass | Weight − fat mass | 75 − 9.0 = 66.0 kg |
| Weight At Goal | Lean mass ÷ (1 − goal % ÷ 100) | At 10%: 66.0 ÷ 0.90 = 73.3 kg |
In this example the player is at 12.1%, just above the 7–11% range for midfielders. Reaching 10% while keeping the same lean mass would mean weighing about 73.3 kg, roughly 1.7 kg less. Lengths in the tape formula are in centimetres and “log” means log base 10.
Which Body Fat Method Should You Use?
Tape Method
U.S. Navy formulaUses neck and waist (plus hips for women) with your height. It focuses on where fat is stored, so it works well for athletic players.
- Need: a soft tape measure
- Accuracy: usually within 3 to 4 points of lab tests
- Best for: most amateur and semi-pro players
Skinfold Method
Jackson-Pollock 3-siteCalipers pinch the fat layer at three sites. Many clubs and academies use skinfolds every few weeks, and often track the total in millimetres.
- Need: skinfold calipers and some practice
- Accuracy: good with a trained tester
- Best for: teams and regular tracking
BMI Estimate
Deurenberg formulaPredicts body fat from BMI, age and sex. It is quick but can’t tell muscle from fat, so it often reads high for muscular players.
- Need: height and weight only
- Accuracy: rough for athletes
- Best for: a quick first guess
Lab Methods
DEXA and similar scansA DEXA scan measures fat, muscle and bone directly. Professional clubs use it for a precise baseline, but it costs money and needs a clinic.
- Need: a clinic or sports lab
- Accuracy: the most accurate option
- Best for: a precise starting point
Why Body Fat Differs By Position
- Goalkeepers cover the least distance and rely on size, reach and explosive power, so a few points more body fat is normal.
- Defenders need mass and strength for headers, blocks and physical battles with strikers.
- Midfielders run the most, often 10 to 13 km a match, so they tend to be the leanest players on the pitch.
- Forwards need lean muscle for power and low body fat for acceleration and quick bursts of speed.
Playing level matters too. Amateur and Sunday-league players often sit a few points above these ranges and still play well. A steady trend in the right direction matters more than hitting an exact number.
Tips For Measuring Body Fat Accurately
- Measure in the morning, before training, food or large drinks.
- Keep the tape flat and snug on the skin, but don’t press it in.
- Relax your stomach and breathe out normally before measuring your waist.
- Take each measurement two or three times and use the average.
- Use the same calipers and the same tester for skinfolds.
- Avoid testing straight after a match, when you may be dehydrated.
- Stick to one method so your results are fair to compare.
- Check every 4 to 6 weeks rather than every day.
Changing Body Fat Safely
If you are above the range for your position and want to bring it down, slow and steady works best. Aim for about 0.25 to 0.5 kg a week, ideally in pre-season or the off-season, keep protein high, keep up strength training and fuel training and match days properly with carbohydrate. Good sleep helps with both appetite and recovery.
Going too low is risky. Very low body fat can lead to low energy availability, often called RED-S, which is linked to tiredness, illness, stress fractures and hormone problems in both male and female players. That’s why this calculator doesn’t work out targets below 6% for men or 14% for women.
Body Fat Calculator For Footballers FAQ
What Is A Good Body Fat Percentage For A Footballer?
For trained male players, about 7 to 14% is typical depending on position, and about 14 to 23% for trained female players. Midfielders tend to be at the low end and goalkeepers at the high end.
Is The Body Fat Calculator Free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no sign-up and works on phones, tablets and computers.
Which Method Is The Most Accurate?
Skinfolds taken by a trained tester are usually the most accurate of the three, followed by the tape method. The BMI estimate is the least accurate for athletes because it can’t tell muscle from fat.
Which Position Has The Highest Body Fat?
Goalkeepers usually carry a few points more body fat than outfield players, because they run much less and rely on size and explosive power.
Which Position Has The Lowest Body Fat?
Midfielders usually have the lowest body fat, because they cover the most distance in a match.
Why Is My BMI Result Higher Than My Tape Result?
BMI only uses height and weight, so muscle counts as if it were fat. Muscular players often get a high BMI estimate. Trust the tape or skinfold result more.
How Often Should Footballers Check Body Fat?
Every 4 to 6 weeks is enough for most players. Measure the same way and at the same time of day so results are fair to compare.
Can Young Players Use This Calculator?
The formulas were made for adults, so results for players under 18 are only a rough guide. Growing players should focus on fitness and healthy eating, not body fat targets.
