About The Tool

What Is A Football Pitch Size Calculator?

A football pitch size calculator works out how much space a football pitch takes up. You enter the length and width, and the football pitch size calculator gives you the playing area in square metres, square yards, square feet, acres and hectares, plus the total ground needed once you add a safe run-off around the edges.

It is useful for clubs, schools, councils, groundsmen and builders planning a new pitch, re-marking an old one or pricing grass seed, turf or artificial grass. This football pitch size calculator also checks your size against the official rules, shows how it compares with standard pitches, estimates the total length of lines to paint and draws your pitch to scale with all the markings.

Did you know? Football pitches don’t have one fixed size. Law 1 gives a minimum and maximum, so two professional grounds can have different pitch dimensions and both be legal.
Official Sizes

Official Football Pitch Size (Law 1)

Limits for 11-a-side football from the IFAB Laws of the Game.

MeasureLength (Touchline)Width (Goal Line)
Minimum90 m (100 yd)45 m (50 yd)
Maximum120 m (130 yd)90 m (100 yd)

FIFA Recommended105 m68 m
FA Recommended Adult110 yd (100.6 m)70 yd (64 m)

The touchline must always be longer than the goal line. Most top-flight stadiums use 105 × 68 m, while many grassroots adult pitches are close to the FA’s 110 × 70 yards. The football pitch size calculator flags any size outside these limits.

Source: The FA, goalpost and pitch sizes and line marking (2025–26). For U13–U14, 21 × 7 ft goals are recommended but 24 × 8 ft goals are also allowed. The “with run-off” sizes include the FA’s minimum of 3 yards on every side. County FAs and leagues can set their own rules.

Markings

These markings are the same on every full-size pitch, whatever its length and width. Small-sided youth pitches use smaller areas, so the football pitch size calculator scales their markings down in the drawing.

The Formula

How The Football Pitch Size Calculator Works

Example: a FIFA-size 105 × 68 m pitch with 3 m of run-off.

StepFormulaExample
Playing AreaLength × width105 × 68 = 7,140 m²
In Square Yardsm² ÷ 0.83618,539 yd²
Hectaresm² ÷ 10,0000.71 ha
Acresm² ÷ 4,046.861.76 acres
With Run-Off(Length + 2 × run-off) × (width + 2 × run-off)111 × 74 = 8,214 m²
Line MarkingOutside lines + halfway line + boxes + circle + arcs≈ 717 m
Surface CostArea with run-off × cost per m²8,214 × your price

Surface cost uses the area with run-off, because the run-off is usually turfed or surfaced too. Enter any price in your own currency, per m² or per yd², and the football pitch size calculator multiplies it out for you.

Futsal

Futsal Court Size

MeasureLengthWidth
Futsal Laws25–42 m16–25 m
International Futsal38–42 m20–25 m
Common Size40 m20 m

Futsal goals are 3 m wide and 2 m high. The penalty area is drawn as a 6 m curve from each post, with a penalty mark at 6 m and a second penalty mark at 10 m. Choose Futsal in the football pitch size calculator to check a court and see it drawn to scale.

Tips

Tips For Planning A Football Pitch

  • Line the pitch up north to south so the low sun is never in one team’s eyes.
  • Leave at least 3 m of run-off with no fences, walls or benches inside it.
  • Allow about 6 yards between neighbouring pitches.
  • Check the ground is level and drains well before marking out.
  • Use the 3-4-5 rule with tape measures to get perfect right-angle corners.
  • Plan line paint from the line marking length in the results.
  • Move goalmouths slightly each season on grass to spread the wear.
  • Check your league handbook before building a new youth pitch.
