How The Movie Rating Converter Works
The score is first converted into its percentage position on the original scale, then that percentage is applied to each target scale.
This is a mathematical scale conversion. It does not make different movie websites’ rating methods, audiences or review systems equivalent.
What Is A Movie Rating Converter?
A Movie Rating Converter changes a movie score from one numeric scale into another. For example, a rating of 8 out of 10 can be represented as 4 out of 5 stars or 80 out of 100.
This can make different personal rating systems easier to compare. One person may record movies using a 10-point scale, while another uses 5 stars. A conversion provides a common mathematical reference without requiring the original rating to be entered again.
The GlobeHour Movie Rating Converter can work with 10-point, 5-star, 100-point, percentage, 4-point and custom scales.

Common Movie Rating Scale Conversions
| 10-Point Rating | 5-Star Rating | Percentage | 100-Point Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10/10 | 5/5 | 100% | 100/100 |
| 9/10 | 4.5/5 | 90% | 90/100 |
| 8/10 | 4/5 | 80% | 80/100 |
| 7/10 | 3.5/5 | 70% | 70/100 |
| 6/10 | 3/5 | 60% | 60/100 |
| 5/10 | 2.5/5 | 50% | 50/100 |
Convert A Movie Rating Out Of 10 To 5 Stars
A 10-point movie rating can be converted to a 5-star scale by dividing the score by two. A rating of 8 out of 10 therefore becomes 4 out of 5 stars. A rating of 7.4 out of 10 becomes 3.7 out of 5.
8/10 Example
8 ÷ 10 = 80%, and 80% of a five-star scale is 4 stars.
9/10 Example
9 ÷ 10 = 90%, and 90% of a five-star scale is 4.5 stars.
You can also choose to round the displayed star result to the nearest half-star or whole star when using a simplified personal rating system.
Convert A 5-Star Movie Rating To A 10-Point Score
To convert a 5-star rating into a 10-point score, multiply the star rating by two. For example, 4 stars out of 5 becomes 8 out of 10.
A 3.5-star rating becomes 7 out of 10, while 4.25 stars becomes 8.5 out of 10 when using an exact mathematical conversion.
3 Stars
Equivalent scale position: 6/10 or 60%.
4 Stars
Equivalent scale position: 8/10 or 80%.
4.5 Stars
Equivalent scale position: 9/10 or 90%.
Convert Movie Ratings To Percentage
A percentage provides a convenient common scale because every rating can be represented between 0% and 100%. Divide the rating by its maximum possible score and multiply the result by 100.
For example, 7.5 out of 10 becomes 75%, while 4 out of 5 stars becomes 80%. A score of 16 out of 20 also becomes 80%.
Percentage Is The Converter’s Common Reference
The calculator normalizes every rating to a percentage internally before creating the other rating-scale values.
Movie Rating Scale Conversion Is Not Review-System Conversion
A mathematical rating conversion only changes the numeric scale. It does not mean that scores from different movie-review services have identical meanings. Different platforms can use different audiences, review rules, averaging systems or scoring methods.
For example, a percentage displayed by one service may represent the share of positive reviews rather than an average rating. Converting that number to stars mathematically does not turn it into an official star rating from that service.
Important: use this tool for numeric normalization and personal comparison. Do not present converted scores as official ratings from another platform.
Using A Custom Movie Rating Scale
Some people use rating systems such as 20 points, 50 points or another personal maximum. Select Custom Scale and enter the maximum possible score used by your system.
For example, if a movie is rated 16 out of 20, the converter calculates 16 ÷ 20 = 0.80. The movie therefore occupies 80% of that scale, which corresponds mathematically to 8/10 or 4/5.
Custom-scale tip: the rating you enter must not be greater than the custom maximum score.
Why Convert Movie Ratings?
Personal Watchlists
Convert older ratings when moving a watchlist from one personal scale to another.
Rating Comparisons
Put several numeric ratings onto the same scale before comparing them.
Consistent Reviews
Convert scores when your website or notes use a different maximum rating.
A converter can be especially useful when you have years of movie ratings stored using one scale and later decide to adopt another. Instead of manually re-rating each film, you can normalize the existing numbers.

Tips For Converting Movie Ratings Correctly
- Confirm the original maximum score before converting.
- Do not enter a rating larger than the original scale maximum.
- Use more decimal places when you want a more precise result.
- Use half-star rounding only when your personal system uses half stars.
- Remember that scale conversion does not change the underlying opinion.
- Do not treat mathematical conversions as official platform ratings.
- Use a custom maximum for unusual rating systems.
- Keep one consistent scale when comparing a large movie list.
