How A Play-Practice-Play Session Works

A 60-minute example from this planner. Players start and finish with games, with focused practice in the middle.

About The Tool

What Is A Soccer Training Session Planner?

A training session planner helps coaches turn a goal like “we need to pass better” into a practice they can run tonight. Instead of searching for drills and doing the math on timings, you get a complete plan with each part of the session timed to the minute.

The GlobeHour Training Session Planner & Drill Generator picks drills that suit your players’ age and your chosen focus, works out group sizes and the small-sided game format from your number of players, and lists every piece of equipment you need. Don’t like a drill? Swap it with one tap. When you’re happy, download the session as a PDF or copy it into your team chat.

Good to know: in the Play-Practice-Play style, about half of the session is game play, so players practise their skills in real game moments.
The Formula

How Session Time Is Split

Example: a 60-minute session for the Portland Pines U10 with 13 players.

PartShare Of TimeExample (60 Min)
First Play / Warm-Up20% / 15%60 × 0.20 = 12 min
Practice 1 / Technical Drill22%60 × 0.22 = 13 min
Practice 2 / Opposed Drill22% / 23%60 × 0.22 = 13 min
Second Play / Small-Sided Game30% / 32% (plus rounding)60 − 12 − 13 − 13 − 4 = 18 min
Cool-Down & Review6% / 8%60 × 0.06 = 4 min

The first number is the Play-Practice-Play split and the second is the Classic split. Game size = players ÷ 2 per team, capped at the usual size for the age group. With 13 U10 players, that’s one 6v6 game with one player rotating in.

Tips

How To Run A Great Training Session

  • Set up all the cones before players arrive.
  • Keep instructions short and show, don’t tell.
  • Every player should have lots of touches. Avoid long lines.
  • Use one clear focus per session.
  • Praise good examples of the focus out loud.
  • Make a drill easier or harder as you watch.
  • Give water breaks between each part.
  • End with a game so players leave happy.
FAQ

Training Session Planner FAQ

How Do I Plan A Soccer Training Session?

Choose your age group, number of players, session length and one focus. The planner builds a timed session with a warm-up or first play, two practice drills, a small-sided game and a cool-down.

Is The Training Session Planner Free?

Yes. It is completely free, needs no sign-up and works on phones, tablets and computers. You can also download the plan as a PDF.

What Is Play-Practice-Play?

It’s a session model used in U.S. Soccer’s grassroots coaching. Players start with a game, then do focused practice, and finish with a bigger game.

How Long Should A Youth Soccer Practice Be?

Many youth teams train for 45 to 75 minutes. Younger players often do best with shorter sessions full of games.

Can I Change A Drill I Don’t Like?

Yes. Tap Swap Drill on any part of the plan to get another drill that fits the same focus and age group, or tap New Drills to change them all.

What If I Have An Odd Number Of Players?

The planner shows how many players rotate in during games. You can also use a neutral player who plays for the team with the ball.

Which Equipment Do I Need?

The plan lists everything for your session, usually balls, cones and bibs, plus goals or small goals for game drills.

Does It Work For Adult Teams?

Yes. Choose Adult to get drills with bigger game sizes and more demanding versions.

Is My Plan Saved?

Your choices are saved only in your own browser. Nothing is sent to GlobeHour.
