What Is A Football Tactics Board?
A football tactics board is the coach’s whiteboard: a pitch with player markers that you move around to explain formations, pressing, set pieces and attacking patterns. Players understand a plan much faster when they can see where to run and where the ball goes.
This online football tactics board does everything a magnetic board does, and more. Drag players into place, draw solid arrows for runs and dashed arrows for passes, and shade the zones you want to attack or protect. Add steps to build a move, then press Play to animate it. Your football tactics board saves automatically and you can share it with a single link.
Popular Football Formations Explained
All of these are ready to load on the football tactics board.
| Formation | Shape | Strengths | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4-4-2 | Two banks of four, two strikers | Simple, compact, strong partnership up front | Can be outnumbered in central midfield |
| 4-3-3 | Back four, midfield three, front three | Width in attack, pressing high | Full-backs must cover wide areas |
| 4-2-3-1 | Two holding mids behind a No. 10 | Balanced, protects the defence | Lone striker can be isolated |
| 3-5-2 | Three centre-backs and wing-backs | Strong in midfield and through the middle | Space behind wing-backs |
| 5-3-2 | Five defenders, three in midfield | Very solid when defending a lead | Fewer players in attack |
| 3-4-3 | Back three, flat four, front three | Lots of attackers and width | Can be exposed on the counter-attack |
For grassroots football, the board also includes 7-a-side formations (2-3-1, 3-2-1, 2-1-2-1, 3-1-2) and 5-a-side formations (2-2, 1-2-1, 2-1-1).
